The shock rocker Blackie Lawless has turned this back on his former self, and is now a declared new-born Christian. The result is a transition in his lyrical approach to things and leaving some songs out the live-set. But it has had no side-effect on the music, it has actually resulted in their best album since “Still Not Black Enough” from 1995.
I always let the music do the talking, and won’t reflect on his thematic change, even though is feels a bit strange to hear him sing and praise Jesus, taking his stage shows into account. Back to the music; I had not seen this one coming, simply because W.A.S.P. has been walking down mediocre paths on so many occasions lately, and all of a sudden it sounds like something that could have been written for “The Headless Children” or “The Crimson Idol”.
This is the version of W.A.S.P. I love and those two albums still stand as the pinnacle of the band. So to deliver an album that comes very close more than 20 years later is an achievement beyond my wildest expectations.
Sure this in “only” a strong W.A.S.P. album that stays within its safe confines, but that isn’t necessary a bad thing because Blackie Lawless knows his strong sides and delivers an album that showcases them.
A surprising well rounded album – thumbs up!
