This is a really odd release. But the thing is, I’ve come to appreciate it over the past month or so.
Voron is based in Paris, France, consists of three individuals, Yann, Pierre and Voron. Add to that a bunch of guest musicians. The outcome of their efforts is something that sounds different from anything I’ve listened to in a long time. Voron’s vocal, first and foremost, is like a big, drooling, guttural grunt. The guest singers provide some variation to that (which is probably a good thing).
I think, and I do mean think, that the basis of Voron’s music is some sort of melodic death metal, but I’m not sure. It’s metal, for sure, but there’s also funky slap bass in this, slightly jazzy drumming, rock, nu metal riffs and whatnot. Sometimes, it all comes together perfectly, like in Is Suicide My Fate, other times, I miss the red line through it all.
The great thing about this is that it seems like such a conscious choice by these musicians to build contrasts and you sense that they keep the control of what they’re doing. I don’t get all of it, but still I’ve come to the point where I think it’s a great album. The oriental riff of I Dreamt is in itself worth all of your pocket money, imho.
Try it – I dare you.
