Sabiendas – Column Of Skulls

[nyrating]

sabiendas

Sabiendas hail from the Ruhr Area and are one of Germany’s  most active live bands these days. The music is rather technical and sometimes reminding a bit of early Morbid Angel, but less complicated. Also, early Grave influences and Bolt Thrower are recognizable in their music.

Jan’s vocals are rather understandable grunts, the drums tight and the bass has a nice groove. If you didn’t know better, you would think that you just put on a death metal album from the nineties. Battering drums, rattling bass drums and tight low tuned guitar riffs – you’ll hear it all in the first track “Worse Than Death”. The tempo changes from slow to very fast blasting parts keep you focused every second. During the faster pieces, I also sometimes think of Suffocation, but a bit less extreme. The only negative point about the album is perhaps the lack of originality, but who cares when the songs are interesting and well performed?

For those who adore old school death metal a welcome album!

Once a metal head, always a metalhead. My parents thought it would only be a period, but they were wrong. I quit to explain the beauty of metal music to others that are not into metal, because it is something you can't tell in words... It is like explaining to a teetotaller why a cold beer is so nice on a hot day... I started with bands like Accept, Metal Church, Iron Maiden and Metallica in the eighties and I think I will still listen to them when I'm stone deaf and old...
