Atomwinter – Iron Flesh

Already being in an old school death metal moode with just listening to the new Grave album, this isn’t a giant step to take. This German combo knows all the answers. I like it when bands keep it simple: no complicated titles, no difficult lyrics about complex subjects and music that immediately sticks.

The music is more old school Swedish death metal than what Grave and Entombed deliver at the moment. The typical riffs, the groove and the nice D-beating metal drums catapult me back to the early Dismember, Entombed, Grave and Unleashed albums. The melodies in the songs also remind of Unleashed and the production is steady and heavy like a leopard tank torturing the battle field. Certain slower parts remind of Asphyx as well and a band like Bolt Thrower can be added to the influences, too. From start to finish, this album is groovy and crunchy in the old school way. O. Hallsschneider has the ideal vocal sound to shout and grunt it all together like it should be done.

Don’t expect a lot of originality, but I’m sure that wasn’t the band’s intention. Although it is a rather short album, it surely leaves you behind with an almost broken neck and feeling shattered as if you just left a war zone.

Once a metal head, always a metalhead. My parents thought it would only be a period, but they were wrong. I quit to explain the beauty of metal music to others that are not into metal, because it is something you can't tell in words... It is like explaining to a teetotaller why a cold beer is so nice on a hot day... I started with bands like Accept, Metal Church, Iron Maiden and Metallica in the eighties and I think I will still listen to them when I'm stone deaf and old...
