Melodic Death Metal? I do not know who had the idea to call The Unguided’s style Melodic Death Metal, because it is definitely not Melodic Death Metal. Metalcore? Yes. Melodic Death Metal? Definitely not. Not even remotely. Also, why should you do that anyway? Is it an ego thing? Why? If you play Metalcore then call your style Metalcore. It is as simple as that.
Be that as it may, even though I respect Metalcore as a form of art, I must say that I did not find the album to be enjoyable. The melodies are simply way too soft and way too catchy. Maybe this is due to the band using a keyboard? Maybe. The keyboard is a tricky instrument for all forms of Metal and most Metal bands who use it completely fail at implementing it in a way that adds something positive to their music. But it is not just the keyboard, it is the entire way how the songs are arranged. You always get the keyboard, catchy melodies, two vocalists with one singing cleanly while the other one does the screaming and that is it. It is simply repetitive. Repetitiveness is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you are repetitive then you better be very entertaining about it.
By now it should be clear that I did not enjoy “Lust and Loathing”. This is also why I find it necessary to rate this album with only 3 devils. Feel free to subtract another devil, or even two if you should be a Death Metal fan.
