British AOR rockers Seven might only have released two albums: “7” in 2014 and this brand new one, but they go way, way back… Actually their roots can be traced back to the late 1980’s. Back then they released two singles that did OK in the UK. They toured extensively and even had the opportunity to open for Richard Marx before fading away into oblivion.
Things got rolling again a couple of years ago, and now they are ready to present their sophomore album. Once more produced by Lars Chriss, who has also been involved in the songwriting, along the likes of Fredrik Bergh (Street Talk etc.), Andy Loos (Glory etc.), Kay Backlund (Lion’s Share etc.) and Jeff Paris (Mr. Big etc.).
AOR and melodic rock had its hay-days in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, but have never experienced the same kind of hype again. But that has not stopped bands from releasing great melodic rock, without the commercial success.
Seven might not have an extensive backcatalogue, but they sure know how to write catchy and memorable rock songs, and after all that’s what count here. Some of their heroes are for sure bands like Journey, Magnum and Foreigner – but we all need input and influences from somewhere to be creative.
“Shattered” is first class AOR and the album is loaded with fine moments and strong and catchy rock tunes. If you like the bands mentioned above then I suggest you give this one a serious consideration.
Best moments: “Light of 1000 Eyes”, “Shattered” and “High Hopes”.
