Primordial‘s Alan Averill – who compiled the Metal Massacre XIV track-listing – comments: “‘Metal Massacre‘ is an institution that has been dormant for far too long. It served as a vital first step for many bands who are far too numerous to mention back in the early 80s. For fans, it was often the first time engaging with many of these acts, some of whom went on to become household names– some of course didn’t, but the rough and ready underground character of ‘Metal Massacre‘ is what set it apart from other compilations back in the day. Those old recordings captured the vitality and energy of the time: all analog hiss, rattling drums, roaring bass and feed-backing solos…No pro tools compression, cut and paste editing or triggered drums back then. You set the tape rolling and then played for your life. It was in this spirit that I went about compiling a new ‘Metal Massacre‘, with an old school mindset. Not the most modern sounding, but the bands that capture a more DIY underground spirit that resonates with what ‘Metal Massacre‘ once represented. Of course the musical climate is different, and you probably won’t be listening to the next Metallica, but what is important is that this spirit does not die and that Metal Blade still supports this underground, underdog ethos. Primordials Alan Averill, der die Tracklist von Metal Massacre XIV zusammenstellte, erzählt: “‘Metal Massacre‘ ist eine Marke, die viel zu lange nicht genutzt wurde. Sie fungierte für viele Bands der 1980er als Trittbrett – zu viele, um sie aufzuzählen. So erfuhren Fans nicht selten überhaupt erst durch diesen Sampler von ihnen, und einige Bands wurden zu festen Institutionen – andere natürlich auch nicht aber der raue Underground-Charakter von ‘Metal Massacre‘ ist das, was die Compilation von anderen aktuellen absetzt. Die alten Sachen fingen die Lebendigkeit und Energie jener Zeit ein: analoges Rauschen, polternde Drums, donnernder Bass und Rückkopplungen … Keine Kompression aus der ProTools-Keksdose, nichts da von wegen “Cut and Paste” oder Schlagzeugtrigger. Man ließ das Band laufen und spielte, so gut man konnte. In diesem Sinne machte ich mich an die Auswahl für das neue ‘Metal Massacre‘, also mit einer Old-School-Einstellung. Es sind nicht die am modernsten klingenden Bands, sondern solche, die eher einen DIY-Underground-Spirit verkörpern und somit widerspiegeln, was ‘Metal Massacre‘ einmal ausmachte. Klar war das musikalische Klima damals anders, und wahrscheinlich werdet ihr nicht die nächsten Metallica hören, aber dass dieser Geist nicht stirbt, ist wichtig, und Metal Blade unterstützen diesen Underground, die Außenseitereinstellung nach wie vor. Hier habt ihr also ein neues ‘Metal Massacre‘! Wiederauferstanden von den Toten! Hier ist der nächste Teil!“

When my old buddy Kenn Jensen asked me if I wanted to contribute to the new site he had created, then called powermetal.dk, I didn't hesitate. My love for metal music was and is great. I wrote my first review during the summer of 2004 (Moonspell's 'Antidote' album). In 2015, I took over the editor-in-chief role.
