Almost a month ago, the Billboard chart-climing Tennessee sextet Whitechapel released their Indiegogo funded DVD ‘The Brotherhood of the Blade’. The DVD also included a full concert from their hometown, Knoxville. What I have here is the audio version of that concert.
I caught a glimpse of Whitechapel at the Wacken Open Air festival in 2013, and that’s just about what I know about them. It was brutal as hell, that much I picked up.
The thirteen songs presented on this new release resonate completely with my impression back then. From the first track onwards, the triple guitar attack of the deathcore outfit hammers away, churning out a bunch of effective riffs, garnished with some melodic doodling here and there. Full-on brutality is really the game here, but it is done with variation, ensuring that there isn’t a dull moment.
For me, the song Prostatic Fluid Asphyxion impresses the most with its Morbid Angel inspired riffing and the mighty half-time double-bass drum roll from 30 seconds into the song.
Note: Who calls a song The Saw is the Law? That’s a Sodom song! Don’t go there!
Anyhoo, great live album. Makes you want to have been there.
