Headless Crown – Time For Revolution

This is the debut album of this Swiss heavy metal band based in Geneva. Influenced by the crackers of metal (Accept, Saxon, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest) this leads to high expectations. I will tell you right off of the bat, this band does deliver. Vocalist Steff Perrone is a classic metal singer with a warm clean voice but also with a certain rougher edgy style. The rhythmn section has a nice drive and adds a certain groove to many songs. The rumbling bass reminds of Iron Maiden a lot of times. The guitar riffs have a nice heavy sound to them and twin guitar attacks are a regular formula. Most interesting, however, is that the band wrote some fine songs. A lot of bands can play their instruments, but forget to write songs that stick to the listener’s mind and make you want to move – not Headless Crown. Sure, there are loads of parts that are reminiscent of other bands and some music could be from a band as U.D.O. as well, but it all sounds great. The beginning of “Searching For My Soul” really sounds like it was taken straight from an Iron Maiden album, but they get away with it. Most of the songs are mid-tempo and that is perhaps the only thing that could or should be improved on the next album.

There haven’t been a lot of good debut albums this year I think, but this certainly is one that belongs in the top ten. If you listen to the quality of the songs, you could think that the band already released several albums and that this is their fifth or sixth in a row. I give this album a high rating, perhaps 10 points are too much, but that is because this is their debut! Well done!

Once a metal head, always a metalhead. My parents thought it would only be a period, but they were wrong. I quit to explain the beauty of metal music to others that are not into metal, because it is something you can't tell in words... It is like explaining to a teetotaller why a cold beer is so nice on a hot day... I started with bands like Accept, Metal Church, Iron Maiden and Metallica in the eighties and I think I will still listen to them when I'm stone deaf and old...
