A new album of Swedish Battle power metal band Civil War with Nils Patrik Johansson as recognizable beacon. The singer known from Astral Doors and Wuthering Heights is the reason that this album will be liked by several metal fans. With his singing he makes the difference between just one of the many albums released and worth listening to.
Again the music is not very original and that sees to it that this isn’t an album that will get a really high rating. I hear, like on their earlier albums a lot of Sabaton, lots of bombast and choirs. In my opinion this is a mix of Wuthering Heights with Sabaton, which isn’t bad at all, but I hear totally nothing new or different that excites me or makes me want to pick up the phone to call someone to listen to this album. The hoompa polka song “Tombstone” is more a song for a Wuthering Heigths album and a lot of music is just Sabaton 2.
I sure had some pleasure moments with the fast track “Gladiator”, the church organs in “The Last Full Measure” and the singing of Nils in “Aftermath”, but that is just not enough. Perhaps I get too overloaded with music to really enjoy an album like this, but bands should realize that there are over 150 new cd releases every month and that you really have to make the difference to outshine. Civil War has the luck that they have a great singer, which saves them this time.
