Let’s get the facts in place: Azurica is a five-piece from Germany, the area of Nuremberg to be precise. They’ve been around since 2009 and released one demo CD prior to this six-track EP. Mika Jussila (Nightwish/Children of Bodom et al) has mastered the effort at Finnvox Studios.
So far so good.
I haven’t heard the 2013 demo which went under the same title as this EP – and by the way contained four of the same songs. This immediately makes me wonder if this is a sign that Azurica have problems creating new material? The suspicion grows stronger when you listen to the actual quality of the songs.
The songs are what I would call patchy, messy and incoherent. The attempts at orchestration (keyboard) come across as being odd and don’t really fall into place. The vocals of Thomas Weiss are more than anything a mumbling effort and lacks dynamism.
Although there are occasional pieces of fine melody, the totality of this EP has an air of disconnectedness and a great want for a strong hand to write actual songs.
