{"id":11284,"date":"2016-09-21T19:50:56","date_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:50:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/powerofmetal.dk\/?p=11284"},"modified":"2016-09-21T19:50:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:50:56","slug":"excellion-unsean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsite.powerofmetal.dk\/reviews\/excellion-unsean","title":{"rendered":"Excellion &#8211; Unsean"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s be honest, Mexico probably isn\u2019t probably even in the top ten of countries that comes to mind when thinking about progressive and technical metal.\u00a0 I\u2019m drawing a blank on the whole subject as I write this to be honest, but let\u2019s give kudos to <strong>Excellion<\/strong> for coming together under rare geographic musical circumstances and putting together a capable band.<\/p>\n<p>The band has been steadily gaining momentum since their first release in 2009, and with this EP being their fourth offering to the masses, they\u2019ve helped establish themselves as capable songwriters and have given themselves the ability to share the musical landscape with their contemporaries.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to note before addressing the ever important musical content is the name of the EP.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>Unsean<\/strong>\u201d upon first glance looks like the description of someone wanting to be unlike the name Sean.\u00a0 This was my first thought (weird, I know), and while others saw it as a typo of the word \u201cunseen\u201d, it\u2019s a play on that particular word with \u201csea\u201d being inserted.\u00a0 It\u2019s an interesting title, but I feel it\u2019s caused more confusion than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>And music-wise, <strong>Excellion<\/strong> dabble in an accessible form of progressive metal with some djent leanings.\u00a0 The positive aspect of that is that the band keeps the djent on the down low instead of overusing the style like many bands tend to do, and they don\u2019t play a prog style that is rife with technical wankery.\u00a0\u00a0 The band flows through five songs with a digestible and competent sound.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>Unsean Pt. 1 \u2013 In Search Of Infinity<\/strong>\u201d opens up the EP with feverish drum galloping which sets the stage for a loose djent groove.\u00a0 Sure, it\u2019s not terribly original, but there\u2019s a decent flow and general energy in the song, which make it a good choice for an opener.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>Unlucky Charm<\/strong>\u201d (which features <strong>Fernando Obregon<\/strong> from <strong>Joliette<\/strong>) comes across as not so memorable, with more of a pedestrian sound. \u00a0It unfortunately doesn\u2019t build on the stronger opening song.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>The Courier<\/strong>\u201d features a more down-tuned and punchy sound with smatterings of interesting guitar melodies.\u00a0 It might be one of the better songs on the release as it\u2019s catchy and has enough depth to keep it interesting.\u00a0 \u201c<strong>Diablo Jr.<\/strong>\u201d (featuring <strong>Jose Macario<\/strong> from <strong>Arcadia Libre<\/strong>) is a bit more focused on the technical side of things than the rest of the songs with all instruments gelling well.<\/p>\n<p>The final song \u201c<strong>Unsean Pt. 2 \u2013 The Heart Of The Sapphire<\/strong>\u201d is a rather melancholy and somewhat boring way to end the EP.\u00a0 The song doesn\u2019t really venture anywhere in the six-minute time length and it ends the release off with a whimper, which doesn\u2019t leave me with the best impression after summing up all five songs.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing I can say is that although the band plays very well together and gave us a professional recording, the lows seem to outshine the positive aspects in some ways.\u00a0 While I did enjoy certain songs, it seems like when they start to hook my interest, it\u2019s brought down.\u00a0 Continuity wasn\u2019t used in the most optimal way as far as picking strong material to represent the whole EP.<\/p>\n<p>I feel like this band can accomplish more as they certainly have the tools to attain this, but focusing more is definitely my number one hope for the group.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tracklist:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>01.
