The release of SABATON’s ninth full-length record perfectly coincides with the band’s 20th anniversary and the concept album is based on events during the First World War. The band started the recordings exactly 100 years after the end of the First World War (11/11/1918) and took 3 months of intensive work to complete the album together with their long term producer and partner Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge studios. Furthermore, the album has been mastered by Maor Appelbaum and the artwork was once again created by Peter Sallaí. “This is not the first time we have sung about stories from this period in time, but now we felt the timing was right to make a full concept album about this war”, explain the band.

Sabaton – The Great War

Swedish SABATON will be releasing their new album The Great War today. While their genre IS power metal, they have kinda created their own thing – because Sabaton is not known for singing about dragons and fantasy feuds, instead drawing inspiration from historical conflicts and the world wars. The Great War is a concept album about World War I and different aspects of it. Those historical topics range from “Fields of Verdun”, which tells the tale of the longest-lasting battle of the war in Verdun, to “A Ghost in the Trenches” detailing trench warfare, which was heavily used in World War I, but also proved extremely fatal. Sabaton is also releasing a history version of this album, which features a short narration at the beginning of each track, setting the mood and story of the song. The historical cherry on top of the album is the final track, “In Flanders Fields”, which is a choir rendition of a famous poem from World War I.

Highlights for me include “The Attack of the Dead Men”, which has an incredibly catchy, epic-sounding chorus and a classic power metal guitar solo, sprinkled with some subtle electronic elements, which is always fun.

Joakim Brodén’s vocals are good as ever, especially on the upbeat hymns “82^nd All The Way” and “Devil Dogs”. Honestly, it’s hard to pick favorites on this album – I can’t say I dislike any of the songs, because all in all, The Great War sounds like classical Sabaton, so it’s easily digestible. Some may find that boring, but I don’t think so in this case. And if anything, I think Sabaton should be praised for maintaining their original sound and feeling after losing most of the original members (Brodén and bassist Pär Sundström being the only remaining original members).

Swedish heavy metal heroes SABATON are set to release their new album ‘The Great War’ on July 19th, 2019. Today the band is proud to announce their European tour dates for “The Great Tour”, with fellow Swedes AMARANTHE and Finnish cello rockers APOCALYPTICA supporting.
On top of this, SABATON are proud to release the third single from the new album and title track, ‘Great War’.

“We choose ‘Fields of Verdun’ to be the first single since we felt it represent the album perfect, a classic SABATON metal song which we cannot wait to include in the future setlists. The story of the battle of Verdun is also very representative for the album since it has all elements that identifies with ‘The Great War’. Verdun is so much WW1 that we decided to hold the first album presentation in this city, inviting journalists from around the world to not just hear the album, but also understand the story behind it.

It is the first single from the upcoming album even if we just released ‘Bismarck’, but that song is not from the upcoming album. We decided to write ‘Bismarck’ outside the album since the story does not connect to WW1 and also that it was recorded at a different time. The meaning of this song was a tribute to all fans who have contributed over the years by sending us ideas for future songs, please continue with that!”

Bassist Pär Sundström comments: “We choose ‘Fields of Verdun’ to be the first single since we felt it represent the album perfect, a classic SABATON metal song which we cannot wait to include in the future setlists. The story of the battle of Verdun is also very representative for the album since it has all elements that identifies with ‘The Great War’. Verdun is so much WW1 that we decided to hold the first album presentation in this city, inviting journalists from around the world to not just hear the album, but also understand the story behind it.

It is the first single from the upcoming album even if we just released ‘Bismarck’, but that song is not from the upcoming album. We decided to write ‘Bismarck’ outside the album since the story does not connect to WW1 and also that it was recorded at a different time. The meaning of this song was a tribute to all fans who have contributed over the years by sending us ideas for future songs, please continue with that!”

The release of SABATON’s ninth full-length record perfectly coincides with the band’s 20th anniversary and the concept album is based on events during the First World War.

SABATON announce their new studio album “The Great War”

Today, Swedish heavy metal heroes SABATON reveal the title and artwork of their new studio album that will be released in summer 2019. This ninth full length record, that will see the light of day right in time for the band’s 20th anniversary, will be a concept album named “The Great War” covering stories from the First World War.

“The Great War” will be available worldwide through Nuclear Blast Records on July 19th and pre-orders start on April 19th, so watch out for limited and exclusive editions at www.nuclearblast.de

The band has started the recordings exactly 100 years after the end of the First World War (11/11/1918) and took 3 months of intensive work to complete the album together with their long term producer and partner Jonas Kjellgren at Black Lounge studios. Furthermore, the album has been mastered by Maor Appelbaum and the artwork was once again created by Peter Sallaí.

Side by side with the album, the Swedes have worked hard to make their 20th year anniversary a very exciting year, and also started the SABATON History Channel – a unique collaboration between the band themselves and multimedia historians Indy Neidell and Timeghost, capturing the power of social media to tell stories about the wars, battles and heroes behind SABATON’s songs.

SABATON – History Channel launches with ’40:1′

The new SABATON History Channel has launched with an episode about one of the band’s best-loved songs – the Polish anthem ’40:1′. The first episode, which tells the story of the Battle of Wizna in World War II, when a few hundred Polish soldiers stood against more than 40,000 German invaders, is available to view on the YouTube channel now. SABATON History is a unique collaboration between the band themselves and multimedia historians Indy Neidell and Timeghost, capturing the power of social media to tell the stories behind SABATON’s songs. Music and history fans have been talking about the channel ever since it was first trailed on 8 January, and more than 30,000 advance subscribers were ready and waiting for the first episode. Bass player Pär Sundström, who co-presents the episode, explained why ’40:1′ was chosen first:

“Not only is this one of our most popular songs, the chorus actually starts with the line ‘baptised in fire’. Nobody in the world of metal has ever done a project like this before, so we knew this was the right choice for our own baptism of fire!A lot of people tell us this was the song that got them listening to Sabaton, and it’s been a regular part of our live show for over 10 years, so we’re sure subscribers will enjoy the story behind it.

Filming has been amazing and the episodes will be fun to watch, but the history team also take their research very seriously and we think even we will learn something from SABATON History.”

A new episode will air at 3.30pm CET every Thursday, telling the true-life stories behind every SABATON song – including those from the highly-anticipated new album – meaning the channel is committed to run for the next year and beyond. Each story is researched by historians, who will use exclusive footage from the PA archives, original graphics, and of course SABATON music, to bring it to life in a fast-paced 15-minute episode. Every week they will be joined in the specially-designed studio by a member of SABATON, who will share the band’s own stories about the song, including insights into the writing process and tales from the recording studio. Channel presenter and writer Indy Neidell, the face of ambitious Youtube history projects The Great War, Between Two Wars, and World War II, said:

“This is going to be historical! We’ve got a rock band working with a bunch of history nerds to use the power of Youtube, music and storytelling to bring history to life in a way nobody’s seen before.

Studying history can tell us so much about our own lives and our own world, so for me as a historian, having this amazingly cool way to get these stories out there – and having tons of fun in the process – feels like we’re making our own piece of history right here.”
