Comprised of 10 tracks, the record was produced by Luca and Fabio themselves, whilst Simone Mularoni (Domination Studio, San Marino) took care of its recording, engineering, mixing and mastering. Guest appearances by Elize Ryd (AMARANTHE) and Mark Basile (DGM) among others round off Turilli / Lione RHAPSODY’s first studio album. The contemporary cover artwork was designed by Stefan Heilemann (EPICA, PAIN, LINDEMANN etc.), who has previously worked on both Luca Turilli’s RHAPSODY records.

Luca states, “»Zero Gravity (Rebirth And Evolution)« is much more than an album title. It is a real band mantra underlining the evolution of a great artistic collaboration, a modern day approach and the intention to evolve the band’s sound to a new frontier, conceptually, musically and lyrically. This debut album will definitely present the multiple faces of our new band: modern ultra-heavy guitars, a vocal roller-coaster inspired by QUEEN’s masterworks, dramatic arrangements, breathing soundscapes enriched by ethnic music elements from different continents and surely the most emotional and intense lyrics we ever had. The new artwork realized by Heile represents the synthesis of such evolution and the deep heartfelt message related with it!”

Adds Fabio, “»Zero Gravity (Rebirth And Evolution)« represents the perfect evolution of a musical vision we had, a great artistic collaboration to create a new fresh sound with amazing ideas, great production, hard work from great musicians and people involved and most importantly, a fantastic start for this new band. In support of the album, the band setup a crowdfunding campaign to finance the recording process, through which they collected an overwhelming amount of €60,000 from their loyal and dedicated fanbase.

Their fans had to be very patient, but now Turilli / Lione RHAPSODY – featuring original RHAPSODY members Luca Turilli and Fabio Lione, completed by former RHAPSODY members Dominique Leurquin, Patrice Guers and Alex Holzwarth – have finally brought light into the darkness! The band’s debut album entitled »Zero Gravity (Rebirth And Evolution)«, will be released on June 28, 2019 through Nuclear Blast (King Records in Japan & Rest of Asia)!

Rhapsody Of Fire – The Eighth Mountain

Although for me Rhapsody Of Fire have always embodied the appeal of the Symphonic Metal genre, I felt that the band’s last few albums struggled to recapture the magic of “Symphony Of Enchanted Lands” (1998) or “Dawn Of Victory” (2000). So, amidst all that, where does new album “The Eighth Mountain” stand?

It’s worth noting that this marks the full-length recording debut of drummer Manuel Lotter and singer Giacomo Voli (not considering the retrospective “Legendary Years”). In my mind I will always have Fabio Lione as the de facto voice of Rhapsody but Voli is really very good, perhaps slightly less operatic than Lione but there’s a lot of emotion in his singing. Keyboardist Alex Staropoli is the only remaining member of the original line-up and he is now also more active in writing the band’s lyrics.

The songs in “The Eighth Mountain” are mostly very well written – compared with Rhapsody’s back catalogue I get the impression that there seems to be a slightly greater emphasis on heaviness rather than the symphonic paradigm. This is particularly evident in ‘Seven Heroic Deeds’ where, incidentally, we find Lotter in top form. Even Staropoli’s keyboards augment the music’s impact rather than ‘merely’ add pomp and drama to the music.

Other than that, “The Eighth Mountain” contains several hallmarks of Rhapsody’s sound…intricate orchestrations, lavish choirs, flute sounds and of course conceptual fantasy lyrics. With regards to that, this album marks the beginning of a new story which the band is calling ‘Nephilim’s Empire Saga’. In a recent press-release Staropoli said “It’s about which path in life you choose. The story may be fictitious but quite obviously relates to reality the way we experience it every day.”

But what of the songs themselves? ‘March Against The Tyrant’ and ‘Tales Of A Hero’s Fate’ showcase Voli’s impressive talents. ‘Clash Of Times’ sounds as if it was taken from an Yngwie Malmsteen album. ‘The Courage To Forgive’ contains some excellent guitar shredding.

‘Tales Of A Hero’s Fate’ provides an epic conclusion to the album and, curiously enough, features some Black Metal vocals. It would be interesting to hear more of these vocals in future as I feel it enriches the album’s dynamics further. The same ‘Tales Of A Hero’s Fate’ also features a narration by Christopher Lee. Considering Mr Lee passed away more than 3 years ago suggests Staropoli had been planning this album for quite a while.

For me, one of the greatest things about “The Eighth Mountain” is that Rhapsody aren’t just rehashing the same music…they do sound like a band that is evolving. My rating falls short of a perfect score mainly due to ‘Warrior Heart’ which I felt is the album’s weakest link.

But there’s no doubt about it…I haven’t felt this excited about a Rhapsody Of Fire album for quite a while.

Original RHAPSODY members LUCA TURILLI and FABIO LIONE re-join forces to write and record a new album under Turilli / Lione RHAPSODY. It will be the first time that they will record new music together in over 8 years. The band will be completed by former RHAPSODY members Dominique Leurquin, Patrice Guers and Alex Holzwarth

In 2017 Luca and Fabio toured under RHAPSODY’s 20th Anniversary Farewell Tour which saw them reunite and return to stage to perform classic RHAPSODY songs. After closing their RHAPSODY chapter and Luca Turilli’s RHAPSODY disbanding, the two friends kept in search of creative, original and innovative ways to express their artistic visions. Luca and Fabio started visualizing their new collaboration. In that creating a whole new generation of symphonic metal, enriched with modern elements of the musical productions they love so much. The excitement for their project grew with each passing day, so the men agreed to realize their vision under a new and clear band name: “Turilli / Lione RHAPSODY”.

The band is set to enter the studio this winter to record their debut album. To help finance the album they have launched a crowdfunding campaign, where you can pre-order the upcoming album and other perks HERE.

“After concluding the Farewell Tour and disbanding Luca Turilli’s RHAPSODY, I never imagined continuing my activities within the metal genre. But now, thanks to a new artistic vision and our greatly inspiring mantra “Rebirth and Evolution”, I feel very excited for the unlimited artistic possibilities we could have while evolving our sound to new frontiers. We want to promote our fundamental spiritual message of light with the most emotional impact!”

FABIO LIONE adds:

Turilli / Lione RHAPSODY is set to release their debut album next summer.
