UK prog-metal giants return to SA in August for two exclusive shows
At Krank`d Up 2015 progressive metal luminaries, Monuments left South African audiences bewildered at what they`d just witnessed. Since then Monuments has toured the world with the likes of Animals As Leaders, Karnivool, Protest The Hero and Devin Townsend while making tons of new fans along the way.
Now armed with their new and arguably most innovative album yet, Phronesis, Monuments will be returning to South Africa in August 2019 for two exclusive headlining shows. They’ll be joined by rising alt-prog locals, Deity`s Muse who will also be supporting Monuments in the UK in July.
Watch MONUMENTS’ “Mirror Image” video below:

While Gnosis and The Amanuensis paved the way for Monuments’ monumental return on Phronesis, it’s songs, really catchy songs that set the multi-national outfit apart from just about any band on the planet. One listen to “A.W.O.L.,” “Vanta,” “Ivory,” “Leviathan,” and “The Watch” proves Monuments are on the leading edge of musical virtuosity, vocal superiority, and lyrical smarts. Progressive metal is ready for Monuments to take the genre to new heights with Phronesis.
Get ready for a jaw-dropping display of musical prowess. The Phronesis South African tour takes place on August 9th at Mercury Live in Cape Town and August 10th at Platteland in Centurion. Do not miss this opportunity to see one of the planet`s most exciting live acts.

]]>MONUMENTS – release “Mirror Image (Lyric Video)” Taken From “Phronesis”
The transcontinental progressive metallers MONUMENTS are releasing a lyric video for the song “Mirror Image” taken from their upcoming album, “Phronesis”, which is scheduled for a release October 5th, 2018 via Century Media Records.
Check out “Mirror Image (Lyric Video)” here: https://youtu.be/ifo-Fgyqfrw
The band comments:
“ Happy to show you all the 3rd single of ‘Phronesis’ – Mirror Image. Lyrically, the song explores the idea of looking back on previous bad decisions, the want to turn back time and change the scenario after understanding the consequences of those decisions. This is collectively one of our favorite songs of the new album.”
Around the release of “Phronesis” MONUMENTS will embark on a full European tour with special guest Vola as well as Kadinja as support:

MONUMNTS about the album:
“The word Phronesis was a big part of society and philosophy in ancient Greece. Phronesis is wisdom, but a really specific type of wisdom to do with oneself. Wisdom on your practical actions, good judgement, being excellent in character, practical wisdom. Learning what to do and what not to do based on experience, being mindful of everything around you. Something that, at times, all of us can be pretty terrible at.”
After touring the world heavily in support of their album “The Amanuensis” (2014) the intercontinental quintet needed to take a break and catch a breath for multiple reasons. However, the band kept working on “Phronesis” that works as a turning point of the progressive metal band on many levels. The self-produced album was recorded between March and July of 2018 in various studios throughout the world: While guitars and bass were recorded by Jim Pinder (Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, While She Sleeps…) at Treehouse Studios, Derbyshire, UK the drums were played, recorded, tracked and engineered by Anup Sastry (ex-Skyharbor). Chris Barretto recorded his vocals with Cristian Machado (Ill Niňo, Leeway) at Soundwars Studios, NJ, USA, then everything was mixed and mastered by Joel Wanasek at JTW Music, Milwaukee, WI, USA.

]]>MONUMENTS – announce new album, “Phronesis”
Fans have been following foreshadowing news on the band’s social networks and the band is excited to announce that MONUMENTS long-awaited third album, “Phronesis”, is scheduled for a release October 5th, 2018 via Century Media Records.
“The word Phronesis was a big part of society and philosophy in ancient Greece” , explain MONUMENTS. “Phronesis is wisdom, but a really specific type of wisdom to do with oneself.
However, the band kept working on “Phronesis”. “My personal relationship with the meaning of the record starts at ‘Stygian Blue’, which was the 2nd song I wrote for this back in 2015, which came to be while I was in the darkest place I’ve ever been in my 32 years”, says guitarist John Browne. “We all had a bunch of issues that needed time to let heal, so in between writing we were, you know, fixing our broken souls.” Writing about topics that would be troubling their minds acted as a catharsis though, so “Phronesis” works as a turning point of the progressive metal band on many levels. The self-produced album was finally recorded between March and July of 2018 in various studios throughout the world: While guitars and bass were recorded by Jim Pinder (Bullet For My Valentine, Machine Head, While She Sleeps…) at Treehouse Studios, Derbyshire, UK the drums were played, recorded, tracked and engineered by Anup Sastry (ex-Skyharbor). ]]>I’d say “Monuments” is quite a journey of emotions. There is something hypnotizing about the exploratory nature of the album. It’s avant-garde in all its facets; The sound is equipped with a variety of colorful instruments – it also features a female soprano singing alongside a male voice with clean vocals as well as death metal growls; Their lyrics are not restrained by a single theme but by a storm of “daunting emotions” touching upon the ethereal and real aspects of dreams. Sonically, it gives off organic elements which may make one think they are listening to the band live – not overly mixed which perfectly fits their sound and works as an advantage from the perspective of the listener. It has a captivating feat that transitions from a playful simplicity in one moment, to monstrous verses the next.
It was a pleasant experience listening to “Monuments“. The EP only contains 3 songs that span up to 24 minutes of listening so it’s not long but definitely worth the listen.
