Over the course of the week leading into the weekend I had seen a lot of bands. And I mean a LOT! Scheduled for the festival were almost one hundred (100!) bands, it was truly a celebration of metal music and a huge achievement for the organisers. The more I watched however the more something became clear, the American bands set a huge standard in terms of performance, quality and sound – and Lamb of God were one of those bands. The songs may have included mostly older material, but they just nailed everything they touched.
Randy Blythe’s vocals were off the scale, the guitar riffs which Lamb of God are so well-regarded for were played with punishing clarity including those awesome artificial harmonics they employ to close out many of their most famous riffs (‘Omerta’, ‘Walk With Me in Hell’, ‘Laid to Rest’, ‘Redneck’, etc.). Even John Campbell’s bass was loud and clear, which is some achievement considering the dual-guitar sound he was competing against and Art Cruz’s double bass drum work, a sound synonymous with Lamb of God, kept the rhythm together perfectly.
Lamb of God have opened all of their European dates with ‘Omerta’ from their fourth studio album. I’m not a huge fan of bands performing the exact same opening song on an entire tour, but at the same time I personally feel that ‘Omerta’ is a stunning example of metal music and a great way to headbang with a few beers and good friends. Next up were ‘Now You’ve Got Something to Die for’ from the same album and ‘Blacken the Cursed Sun’ from the Sacrament record. The crowd was loving it with circle pits and mosh pits forming all around me. ‘Walk with me in Hell’ soon followed along with ‘Descending’ and 2015’s ‘512’. They dedicated their second last song of the night to Testament’s Alex Skolnick who came out on stage to show his gratitude to the band and crowd. Alex obviously has a great relationship with the band and Randy who called Alex a “book-reading mother f*cker”! Alex provided one of the solos for the title track on Lamb of God’s 2004 studio album ‘Ashes of the Wake’, so he goes way back with the band. The band then closed out the set with ‘Laid to Rest’ from the same album and ‘Redneck’.
This set was the final to be played by Lamb of God on this tour and their next show isn’t until the wintertime back home in the US. Would I have liked to have seen more new material? Yes, I would have, but if there was any doubt as to how good they were, I went back to my room that night and listened to Lamb of God non-stop, they had infected me again just like they did that first time in Dublin.
]]>The sun is about to set and I can feel it getting a bit colder as I walk toward the Hades stage to see American rockers CLUTCH play at 21:30 CET. It’s time to put on my hoodie to keep warm (yes I’ve been to festivals before and know to always have a bagpack with extra clothes with me).
But as soon as CLUTCH enter the stage and begin to play “Ghoul Wrangler”, I can feel the heat from both the stage and the audience and the hoodie comes off.
I can’t help but start moving around and so does the crowd. Now THIS is pure, great old school rock, and the band are really getting the crowd going straight away.
The band keep the high energy going with “Noble Savage”, and I feel like I am at a smoky biker bar, listening, dancing, headbanging and stomping to some great rock. The big difference is that here at COPENHELL, I am accompanied by thousands of people and different types, not only bikers.
I really love the energy the band are sending out. These guys don’t care if they are surrounded by other much heavier bands… They are just doing their thing, and it sounds GOOD!
As I know the rest of the evening will be a lot heavier in regards to music and bands, this is a really great way to start off a huge party and getting the crowd going. Great move from the COPENHELL planners!
Singer Neil Fallons’ voice is rock solid live and he is really rocking the stage along with the band. Actually, the entire band is rock solid and that’s one of the great things about a band like CLUTCH. They give each other space and every single band member is shining. A true rock band with one common goal; to entertain their audience.
A big WOW (at least from me) comes when LAMB OF GOD singer Randy Blythe joins CLUTCH on stage to perform “Passive Restraint”. I actually cheer for a moment until I hear that this is a “no no” in my opinion. Even though I really like LAMB OF GOD, this performance and guest appearance I could do without. But many in the crowd seem to disagree with me and begin to mosh, so I guess it was a good call from the band after all.
Overall this was a really good and solid performance from very experienced musicians who are keeping themselves true to their music (if you set aside the guest performance) and they do one hell of a job doing so! Now, let’s ROCK ON!
]]>The turn out in front of the Helviti stage is a testament to the popularity of the intense troupe from Richmond, Virginia. When Randy Blythe and the rest of LAMB OF GOD played here in December as part of the SLAYER farewell entourage, I was surprised that not only ANTHRAX, but also LOG turned out to deliver rather disappointing shows. ANTHRAX relied far too heavily on covers rather than their own material and LOG didn’t really manage to push the usual intensity over the edge of the stage. I’m hoping for a different effect tonight!
Hm, the set starts off with “Omerta” from Ashes of the Wake. Just like in December. I know it’s a heavy song, but it doesn’t kick off an extreme metal concert the way I think it should. It’s too…slow. It’s not the explosion LAMB OF GOD should be!
Anyhoo, the concert has been kicked off, and the sound, from where I’m standing, is excellent. I’ve chosen to stand just in front of the mixer for once, rather than moving forward. Eventhough the place is packed, I’m aware I miss some of the intensity. Perhaps that this is why I, once again, sense that the spark is missing slightly. I can see that Randy is making all the right moves and screams and growls exactly the way he’s supposed to.
I also can’t help notice on the big screens on the side that Randy has reached a point in life where ancle and knee support has become a necessity after years of jumping around the stages of the world. There’s no doubt that he never spared himself and that this is part of their success.
At some point, a Swedish girl’s passport ends up on the stage. Blythe takes his time to read the girl’s name and she eventually moves to the front and gets her passport. Lucky girl (and the blonde girl gets a compliment as well on the way).
So, what exactly am I complaining about? With a killer sound,a front man like Randy Blythe, songs like “Walk With Me in Hell”, “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For”, “Hourglass”, “Laid to Rest” and “Redneck”, I’d say that objectively very little can go wrong. Subjectively, however, for all the intensity, dust and circle pits, I’m a tad bored from time to time during the gig, and mainly upheld by the enthusiastic colleagues and ex-colleagues I’m surrounded by during the concert. It’s good to see others who’re enjoying themselves, even if you’re only partly convinced yourself.

Mark Morton, the prolific guitarist of Lamb of God, has announced a new project that sees him further explore his creative drive for writing and collaboration. Joining forces with WPP Records and Spinefarm Records on a worldwide basis, Morton will release a 10-track album under his own name and titled Anesthetic. It arrives on March 1, 2019 but CD and vinyl pre-order and merch bundles are available now at www.markmortonmusic.com.
Listen to the lead track “The Truth Is Dead,” featuring his Lamb of God bandmate Randy Blythe and Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, here.
The full track listing, complete with the list of guest artists is below. The album was made alongside a dream team of highly respected musicians from a multitude of musical worlds; some friends, and some who would never be expected to collaborate with metal genre leaders Lamb of God.
MARK MORTON “The Truth Is Dead” lyric video
Starting as idea between Jake (leader of heavy rock band Oni and founder of WPP Records), producer Josh Wilbur (Lamb of God, Trivium, Oni, Gojira) and Morton, the project quickly gathered steam – with Mark at the creative center, Josh Wilbur co-writing, recording, mixing, and producing, and Jake Oni also co-writing and performing. Morton had been writing some of this debut for years. “This album wasn’t a concerted effort to start something outside Lamb of God,” he explains. “Music is always in my head, and until I write and record it, it’s stuck there. But once I record it, it’s out. It’s a catharsis, more for my own sanity.”
Singers on the album include Chester Bennington, Randy Blythe, Jacoby Shaddix, Myles Kennedy, Alissa White-Gluz, Mark Lanegan, Chuck Billy, Jake Oni, Josh Todd, Mark Morales and Naeemah Maddox. Musically, Morton performs all guitars, with Roy Mayorga, David Ellefson, Ray Luzier, Paulo Gregoletto and Alex Bent, Mike Inez, Jean-Paul Gaster, Steve Gorman and Marc Paul rounding out the band.
1. “Cross Off” (feat. Chester Bennington)
2. “Sworn Apart” (feat. Jacoby Shaddix)
3. “Axis” (feat. Mark Lanegan)
4. “The Never” (feat. Chuck Billy + Jake Oni)
5. “Save Defiance” (feat. Myles Kennedy)
6. “Blur” (feat. Mark Morales)
7. “Back From The Dead” (feat. Josh Todd)
8. “Reveal” (feat. Naeemah Maddox)
9. “Imaginary Days”
10. “The Truth Is Dead” (feat. Randy Blythe + Alissa White-Gluz)

COPENHELL adds 16 new bands from a multitude of different music genres in the hard and heavy end of the spectrum to next year’s festival poster, which delivers huge musical variation all the way down from the dark underground and up to the biggest mega acts.
Get ready for a wild tour around the hard and heavy genres at COPENHELL 2016 with no less than 16 new bands on the festival poster: The iconic Guns N’ Roses guitar virtuoso Slash embarked on his exciting solo career ten years ago while still playing in the great rock band, and he is now touring regularly with Alter Bridge front man Myles Kennedy in the group SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS, one of the greatest rock acts at COPENHELL 2019!
The unstoppable American rock band CLUTCH returns to COPENHELL with their hard, engaging punky/groovy blues rock, and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS will visit the festival for the first time ever with a concert combining a solid dose of grunge nostalgia with modern rock!
Everyone that survived LAMB OF GOD’s mad concert at COPENHELL 2012 knows what we can expect when Randy Blythe & co. return to Copenhagen in 2019 with a monstrous blast of a metal concert: A chain explosion of musical rage from the stage – and perhaps – a whole new record for the greatest Wall of Death ever at the festival.
The wild Swedish Vikings from AMON AMARTH are one of the greatest institutions of Nordic death metal, and they will send their longboats out for a new attack on Copenhagen this summer.
Austrian BELPHEGOR channel evil incarnate with their relentless blackened death metal, which will hit COPENHELL’s audience like a musical weapon of mass destruction.
KVELERTAK serve up their Norwegian bully metal with a ferocity and intensity like few other bands! Their mix of angry black metal and groovy rock’n’roll is an incredibly entertaining and winning music combo, rumbling with energy and irresistible singalong factor.
The seminal punk band REFUSED has inspired countless other bands over the years, and COPENHELL’s audience will finally get to experience these Swedish veterans live at the festival.
The hardcore titans from TERROR will spread their aggressive and raging underground sound, while crossover thrash icons MUNICIPAL WASTE will create a wild party in the pit!
From The British Isles we have ORANGE GOBLIN who play thrashy and groovy stoner metal of the kind that will give you a sore neck for several days afterwards.
The metalcore band WHILE SHE SLEEPS will show up and beat the audience senseless with their heavy, explosive sound and crackling, infectious live energy, while Welsh SKINDRED step into the line-up with their wild and crazy ‘Ragga Metal’, pushing the metal and rock genres’ boundaries to their very limits!
We are also very happy to bid the super group THE FEVER 333 welcome to COPENHELL 2019: With the charismatic Letlive frontman Jason Butler behind the mike, Night Verses drummer Aric Improta on the cans and former The Chariot guitarist Stephen Harrison on the axe, the band delivers their riffy and groovy metal with a punchiness like Rage Against the Machine and their own special blend of hip-hop and post-hardcore.
HEILUNG is an experimental folk band based in Denmark, but with members from several different countries, which has shot up from the underground and become incredibly popular in no time.
Their live performances are reminiscent of heathen, shamanistic rituals in a holistic experience that draws the audience into a fascinating ancient spiritual universe.
The other exciting Danish band in this announcement is KONVENT, a young group from Copenhagen that plays moody doom metal and made their way to COPENHELL with a great concert at When COPENHELL Freezes Over 2018 earlier this year.
The aforementioned 16 bands join TOOL, SLIPKNOT, ROB ZOMBIE, DIMMU BORGIR, HALESTORM, DEMONS & WIZARDS, ELUVEITIE, BAEST, WHITECHAPEL og ALIEN WEAPONRY.

]]>RIAA-certified, Billboard chart-topping, five-time Grammy nominated Richmond, VA band LAMB OF GOD recently released their full-length covers album as BURN THE PRIEST, “Legion: XX”, via Epic Records (Nuclear Blast Entertainment). The album is a collection of songs reflecting the greatness of the classic punk, hardcore, crossover and noise artists that influenced them in their formative years, released in celebration of BURN THE PRIEST’s upcoming 20th anniversary.
LAMB OF GOD is pleased to reveal a brand new, Heath Bradley-animated video for their BURN THE PRIEST cover of the MINISTRY hit, “Jesus Built My
Hotrod”.
Watch the video now here: jesus.lamb-of-god.com/
Guitarist Mark Morton says about the track:
“This was a benchmark song from the early 90s. We didn’t even originally plan on doing it – producer Josh Wilbur and I learned it real quickly and put it together. It turned out to be one of our favorite songs of the album. It features a side of Randy that people aren’t used to hearing. Nothing was planned, so it felt fun, and we just went for it.”
In conjunction with the video premiere, “Legion: XX” is now available for a special discounted price via iTunes!Make sure to grab your digital copy of “Legion: XX” for just $7.99 now via this link – but hurry – this sale price is only valid for one week: https://btp.lnk.to/legionxx/iTunes
While online, make sure to check out BURN THE PRIEST’s two other previously released videos from “Legion: XX” – for the ACCUSED’s “Inherit The Earth” and BIG BLACK’s “Kerosene”. LAMB OF GOD may be one of the biggest bands in modern metal, but they will never forget where they came from. Mark Morton (guitar), John Campbell (bass), and Chris Adler (drums) formed the first incarnation of the band, BURN THE PRIEST, in the winter of 1994 after meeting four years earlier as students at Virginia Commonwealth University. Less than a year later, in the summer of 1995, they met vocalist Randy
Blythe before adding Chris Adler’s brother, Willie Adler (guitar), prior to transitioning to LAMB OF GOD – and the rest is global metal history. The tracks on “Legion: XX” are performed with the unmistakable precision that has kept LAMB OF GOD vital for two decades, but ultimately harks back to the raw, punk-driven sound first explored by four unsuspecting college students and a line cook-turned-vocalist in their beginnings as heavy music giants. Produced with Josh Wilbur at the helm, “Legion: XX” exhibits BURN THE PRIEST in their true element. Additional stream/purchasing options for “Legion: XX” and pick up merch bundles now via http://smarturl.it/LegionXX.

BURN THE PRIEST rocked the music world with the release of their brash, in-your-face »Legion: XX« covers of THE ACCUSED’s ‘Inherit The Earth’ and BIG BLACK’s ‘Kerosene’, and today fans can witness another blazing cover – this time of BAD BRAINS’ ‘I Against I’. Listen now via http://burn-the-priest.com.
“It’s been a super-big honor to recently sing with one of my favorite bands of all time,” says vocalist Randy Blythe. “Playing with the BAD BRAINS was an unearthly experience – trying to replace the fastest-singing human ever on songs like ‘Banned in DC’ and ‘Pay to Cum.’ When it came time to choose our cover of ‘I Against I’, I was trying not to sound like H.R., as he’s so unique, but yet also throwing in enough of his style to show respect to his unique voice, through my interpretation. To cover the BAD BRAINS can’t be a straight-forward cover, we had to nail it, and we did.”
In addition to these tracks, »Legion: XX« features other songs originally performed by CRO-MAGS, AGNOSTIC FRONT, QUICKSAND, MINISTRY, MELVINS, S.O.D., and Richmond punk band SLIANG LAOS. Produced with Josh Wilbur at the helm, »Legion: XX« exhibits BURN THE PRIEST in their true element.
