WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM – support Dimmu Borgir & Amorphis co-headline tour for January and February 2020
The year 2020 is set to start with a roll of thunder! Today, the Norwegian black metal force DIMMU BORGIR and Finnish melodic prog metallers AMORPHIS announce a co-headline tour that no metal fan should miss. In January and February of 2020, the unholy Scandinavian alliance will haunt 10 European cities and bring the American post black metallers WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM along as support.
DIMMU BORGIR commented: “We’re going to crush Europe in January next year, and together with AMORPHIS, we’ll make sure that Nordic darkness will create a perfect winter’s storm. See you all soon!”
AMORPHIS’ Esa Holopainen stated: ” When the idea of doing a co-headline tour with DIMMU BORGIR came up, it sounded great, but at the same time we were really surprised. However, the more we thought about it, the more it sounded like a perfect match. Musically we are different, but deep down, it’s not really by that much. There’s a lot of similar elements where both bands take their inspiration. Both bands are absolutely unique on stage. It is needless to say that this tour is going to be a true killer with a massive production, that will undoubtedly bring even more coldness into people’s hearts in January 2020.
We would also like to welcome WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM to open the evenings.”

DIMMU BORGIR’s monumental 10th studio album, “Eonian” was released right in time for the band’s 25th anniversary last year, about seven years after its predecessor, “Abrahadabra”. Since then, the infernal trio consisting of Shagrath, Silenoz and Galder has played various tours all around the world, including shows at leading metal festivals such as Wacken and Hellfest.
AMORPHIS have also been busy touring last year after the release of their 13th studio album “Queen Of Time”, that further established the band’s reputation as one of today’s leading Finnish metal acts. With their complex and original blend of folk and metal elements, a well-balanced interplay of clear vocals and harsh growls, the band is even said to have invented their own genre.
Now, so many years later, DIMMU BORGIR are still going strong, and the latest album, Eonian, was one of my absolute fave albums of 2018. Needless to say, I’m anxious to see how the new songs transport into the live setting. After the rather grim experience with LIVING COLOUR earlier today, I’m slightly precautious when it comes too be over enthusiastic beforehand…
It turns out that there’s nothing to worry about, though. Shagrath and the rest of DIMMU BORGIR convince from the first moment. “The Unveiling” and “Interdimensional Summit” open the concert and later the sounds of “Ætheric” and “Council of Wolves and Snakes” from Eonian fill the evening air, and they all sound fabulous. I’m more than pleased that DIMMU BORGIR have confidence in their newest material and let Eonian be the most heavily represented album on the set list.
In Sorte Diaboli is represented with “The Chosen Legacy”, Abrahadabra with the two best songs from that album, namely “Gateways” and “Dimmu Borgir” (and this is where I realise that the word “Dimmu” is pronounced slightly different from what I’ve always done – it’s of course pronounced with a Norwegian u sound, which is more like a Danish y sound. There you go!). “Puritania” from I is aired, “Progenies of the Great Apocalypse” from Death Cult Armageddon and then, finally, the song that basically turned me into someone who could accept black metal: “Mourning Palace” from Enthrone Darkness Triumphant.
Mind you, a DIMMU BORGIR show is not just the music. Nay, this is a show! The paint, the clothing, the lights, everything is such a complete experience. And the sound is perfect. This is in short a spectacle to behold and a phenomenal experience for the ears. Amazing.
Basically high on this experience, I’m wondering if it’s time for me to head home (I have a three and half hour drive during the night), but I decide to stay on for a while with my friends and watch THE SCORPIONS. The Germans are, afterall, the headliners!
Three songs. That’s how long I last. Rarely have I witnessed anything as embarrassing as this excuse for a rock show. Klaus Meine is NO voice left. None. Nada. Zit. Mikkey Dee or not, I can’t stand this misery.
So, bye bye, Copenhell 2019 – we’ll probably meet again in a year’s time!

]]>2019 TICKETSALES OPEN NEXT WEEK
On June 19-22, 2019, the gates to hell will open for the tenth time in Copenhagen. This will be celebrated with the ultimate tribute to hard rock and metal when HALESTORM, DIMMU BORGIR, ELUVEITIE, DEMONS & WIZARDS, BAEST, WHITECHAPEL, ALIEN WEAPONRY and many, many other bands from all corners of the world and the heavy music genres create an amazing music party. Ticket sales for COPENHELL 2019 will open at 10:00 on Tuesday, October 23 through Ticketmaster.dk.
2019 marks the tenth time that COPENHELL hits Copenhagen – and it will happen with full hurricane force! Together with the ticket sales opening, we start out by announcing seven of the approx. 50 powerful bands that will perform at the festival:With several great rock hits and a Grammy behind them, the American rockband HALESTORM is climbing steadily up the ranks towards the musical heavyweight class – not least by virtue of one of the best current rock singers, Lzzy Hale. Expect all-out sex, drugs and rock’n’roll with a band that established their format a long time ago and only keeps getting better and better.
DIMMU BORGIR has been one of the most requested bands ever since the first COPENHELL festival. It is with great pleasure that we bid these Norwegian musical extremists welcome to Copenhagen in 2019. We look forward to finally experiencing their innovative and progressive symphonic black metal live at the festival.
The Swiss band ELUVEITIE plays folk metal inspired by both celtic metal and melodic death metal – complete with fiddles, bagpipes and songs in Gaul. The grand ensemble creates a rich audio landscape, where beautiful acoustic passages are woven effortlessly together with heavier elements. Expect an extremely atmospheric concert.
The power metal icon Hansi Kürsch is not associated with only Blind Guardian, who gave an impressive concert at COPENHELL 2016. The side project DEMONS & WIZARDS, which Kürsch runs together with Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer, combines inspiration from these two bands into a sound that will make all power metal fans roar with excitement when they perform at COPENHELL 2019 – hopefully with material from their upcoming album.
The Danish death metal act BAEST have showcased their skills at both When COPENHELL Freezes Over, on COPENHELL Metal Cruise and on the festival itself. It is therefore with great pleasure that we welcome them back at COPENHELL 2019, where they will land their musical deathblows from our second largest stage!
WHITECHAPEL is a true institution within the deathcore genre – not least because of Phil Bozeman’s guttural and bestial subwoofer vocals. Through more than a decade, this band has delivered extremely explosive and ferocious music and very engaging concerts. In 2010, they were among the bands that kicked off the very first COPENHELL festival, and we are very happy to see them back in Copenhagen in 2019!
The New Zealand teenage thrashers from ALIEN WEAPONRY will hit COPENHELL like a lightning bolt when they take the stage. These three young musicians mix metal with the Maori culture’s haka war dance in a unique and monstrously muscular music experience that you simply have to experience live.
Much more information to follow – not least about the upcoming COPENHELL 2019 headliners. We invite all fans of hard rock and heavy metal to join our celebration of ten years in hell next year.An unforgettable party awaits!
]]>This time around, via Indiegogo’s crowdfunding, as well as Nuclear Blast, Wintersun is releasing The Forest Seasons. It offers fans to embark on a musical voyage of approximately 54 minutes through a magical forest with four massive tracks, each running over 12 to 14 minutes.
The Forest Seasons starts out blithely with ‘Awaken from the Dark Slumber (Spring)’, a song exhibiting many meticulous arrangements. Some slightly emulating the sounds of Nightwish, a bit of black metal executed à la Dimmu Borgir, and the second half echoing various features of old Ensiferum. The melody of the song ‘Iron‘ springs to mind perhaps. The most upbeat piece on the album overall.
‘The Forest That Weeps (Summer)’ is a very atmospheric track that sonically characterizes more of a frozen, serene landscape. It’s an anthem more suitable for the winter season if you ask me. It is exceptionally chord-oriented, capturing a broad somber setting – something that Moonsorrow or Summoning would showcase in their discography. Aside of course, from the choir allotment that Wintersun, as a rule, unearths for the sake of elevating dramatic effects and theatrics, which is a good thing.
“Well, where are the guitar doodley-things?” you may ask. That would be on ‘Eternal Darkness (Autumn)’, the third track of the album. The lead guitar starts to kick in after the six-minute mark, riding the main melody at first and then eventually becoming more interesting and shreddy, unveiling a riff akin to Marty Friedman‘s playing in Cacophony (although it ends quickly). This piece has an eerie, turn of the millennium era of symphonic black metal feel to it – a new venue for the band – as well as acoustic engravings clearly influenced by the mighty Dissection. It is a song filled with alluring concepts, but a tad bit too long with the drums dismally repetitive and monotonous for a Wintersun song.
The fourth and last track, ‘Loneliness (Winter)’ is where Jari displays the many facets of his vocal capabilities. Perhaps showing some aspects that went amiss from the predecessor’s ‘Sons of Winter and Stars’.
The Forest Seasons is Wintersun’s least creative output in my opinion. At the end of the album, I was left wondering when they will ever release anything that comes close to the self-titled album again. And where is The Way of The Fire?!? My fixation with the band (as is with many others I’m sure) is mainly due to the dedication and impressive amounts of the guitar work displayed on the self-titled album back in 2004, which noticeably has neither returned nor revealed itself even after this release. This album just seems like an immense gap filler designed to keep their fans from complaining momentarily until they finally release what they know the fans have been patiently waiting for; something that closely resembles the album that has made them so notorious in the first place.
Musicians have the right to creative freedom, of course, but I can think of many other bands who plunge and thrive in the waters which convey the same sort of sentiments found on this album. Undoubtedly, many others will enjoy this new release through and through, but this is not the Wintersun I was looking for.
