He’s BACK!
When Swedish Doom metallers CANDLEMASS enters the stage at Nordic Noise festival it will be togther with their original singer Johan Längqvist.
I have seen CANDLEMASS live before, but never with their original singer and therefore I have big expectations for this show.
When I first started listening to CANDLEMASS in my teens, this band stood for something dark, powerful and melancholic. But their music always made me feel I was never alone, and, WOW, I am totally not alone when the band enters the stage at 11 PM. I can tell many people here tonight have been waiting for this act to start.
When they start to play I don’t really recognize the sound, as it sounds a lot more “happy” than the dark music I remember them for. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the music, it’s just not what I expected.
But when the first notes of their third song of the set start to play it all turns around. Now THIS is how I remember them, and also “Mirror Mirror” is one of my absolute favourite CANDLEMASS songs.
I love to see that they still play old material and not only new stuff, as one could expect when they have recently released a new album.
The epic sound of CANDLEMASS can never be taken away from them, and even though they have existed for many years as a band it is great to hear that they have not lost their classical doom sound, which can really be heard when they play “Astorolus – The Great Octopus” from their new album “The Door to Doom”. A great song that shows that they can still make some really good music in the classical doom style, but still not sounding like a “copy” of their old songs. KUDOS!
The atmosphere at the venue is dark and melancholic, but also I see a lot of smiling faces, and some people I talk to say that they have been waiting for this for years; To see Johan Längqvist back on stage again with CANDLEMASS, and someone also tells me they thought they would never live to see this day.
CANLEMASS is putting on a really good performance and I am so happy I get to experience this. That they can still perform this good and solid after so many years (let’s face it, they aren’t 25 years old anymore) is SO impressive.
For those of you that hasn’t seen CANDLEMASS live before, should really do so. You will not be sorry.
What they do on stage and the feeling you get at a CANDLEMASS concert can almost not be explained, it needs to be experienced.

The Metalitalia.com Festival team and all their patrons are looking forward to a very special CANDLEMASS set!
CANDLEMASS have reunited with singer Johan Langquist, who performed on the band’s 1986 debut album “Epicus Doomicus Metallicus”. Johan is back after a 32 year hiatus replacing Mats Levén who’s been with the band since 2012.
The band stated:
“We wanted to find our way back to the roots of Candlemass, back to the soul and essence of the band. Johan Langquist is back and we hope this will give us some new energy and kickstart the heart of doom again. We don’t know if it will last 10 more years or even 5, but if it will give us just another year of having fun and playing the music that we love so much, it will be a blast! The circle is closed, Johan is back!”.

“For the upcoming Candlemass shows at Southern Discomfort (September 8th), Milano (September 16th), Switzerland (September 23rd) and Bukarest (October 20th), Johan Langquist will take care of the vocal duties. The material will of course lean more towards Epicus Doomicus Metallicus + some immortal classics from the C-mass back catalogue. On the bass front Per Wiberg will play these shows instead of Leif, but Mr. Edling will be back in the band next year and deliver doom and thunder on live stages near and far away.”
